Abstract

Arthur J. Arberry (1905-1969) was a prominent 20th -century British scholar, famous for his vast contributions to studies of Arabic and Persian. As a professor of Arabic at Cambridge University. He was a key figure in the development of the study of Oriental languages and cultures within the Western world. Arberry’s   most significant contributions lie within the realm of translation. His English translation of the Holy Quran is well known for literary elegance and readability but has also been criticized in terms of its cultural sensitivity and interpretative decisions. Arberry also rendered important translations of classical Persian poetry, such as the works of Rumi, Hafiz and Omar Khayyam, bringing Sufi philosophy and Persian literary tradition to a wider English-speaking world .Apart from translation, He wrote critical editions of central Arabic text and wrote prolifically on Islamic philosophy .bringing deeper understanding to intellectual traditions in the Muslim world .while his writing are admired for their scholarly erudition and style, some contemporary critics have identified a text-centered approach that sometimes ignored modern socio-political contexts. Apart from these shortcomings, his legacy remains and valuable references for students and scholars of Oriental Studies, symbolizing a bridge between Eastern literary traditions and Western academia.
