Abstract

a

Southern Punjab has long been recognized as a significant center of Islamic spirituality and Sufism in the Indian subcontinent. The region is home to numerous Khanqahs (Sufi lodges) that have played a vital role in the religious, social, educational, and cultural development of society. These institutions emerged as centers of spiritual training, moral reform, dissemination of Islamic teachings, and community welfare. Through their emphasis on love, tolerance, service to humanity, and remembrance of Allah, the Khanqahs contributed significantly to the spread of Islam and the strengthening of social harmony among diverse communities.

This study aims to provide an introductory survey of the famous Khanqahs of Southern Punjab and to highlight their historical background, spiritual significance, organizational structure, and societal contributions. The research focuses on some of the most prominent Sufi centers associated with renowned saints such as Khawaja Ghulam Farid, Bahauddin Zakariya, Shah Rukn-e-Alam, and other influential Sufi figures whose teachings shaped the religious landscape of the region. The study examines the role of these Khanqahs in spiritual guidance, religious education, conflict resolution, charitable activities, and the preservation of Islamic values.

Using a descriptive and analytical approach, the research explores the historical evolution of Khanqahi institutions and their continuing relevance in contemporary society. It also investigates the challenges faced by these institutions in the modern era, including changing social dynamics and the influence of globalization. The findings suggest that the Khanqahs of Southern Punjab remain important centers of spiritual and social influence, fostering religious consciousness, communal cohesion, and cultural heritage. The study concludes that a deeper understanding of these institutions is essential for appreciating their historical contributions and their ongoing role in promoting peace, tolerance, and ethical values within society.
