The Strategic Implications of CPEC for South Asian Geopolitics

Abstract

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is a flagship project of its day and China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one of the most important geopolitical and geo-economic developments of the twenty first century in South Asia. CPEC is launched in 2015 and it is expected to link the western region of China (Xinjiang) with Gwadar port of Pakistan through infrastructure of roads, railways, energy projects, industrial zones and digital infrastructure. In addition to its economic aspects, CPEC has significant strategic implications related to regional power dynamics, security architecture, connectivity and great power competition in South Asia. This article explores strategic importance of CPEC and how it will shape the geopolitics in the region, including Pakistan-China relations, India's security fears, regional connectivity, and the role of external powers like United States. The study concludes that CPEC has changed Pakistan's geopolitical status, which has further enhanced strategic cooperation between Pakistan and China, intensified India-China-Pakistan rivalry and contributed to the reconfiguration of South Asian geopolitics. Based on scholarly literature, policy documents and strategic studies, the article concludes that CPEC provides unprecedented opportunities for economic integration and regional development, but also presents geopolitical challenges that could change the future strategic landscape of South Asia.
