Abstract

The era of the Rashidun Caliphate (11–40 AH) stands as an exemplary period in Islamic history for the practical implementation of human rights. Guided by the Quran and the Sunnah, the Rashidun Caliphs established a governance model rooted in justice, equality, and protection of human dignity. The foundations of human rights during this period encompassed religious freedom, freedom of expression, equality before the law, and the safeguarding of life, property, and honor. The Caliphs emphasized public consultation (Shura), transparency, and accountability in governance, ensuring that rulers themselves were subject to law and public criticism. Notable examples include Abu Bakr’s emphasis on justice in his inaugural address, Umar’s judicial reforms and his famous declaration that even animals' rights were important, Uthman’s welfare measures for the poor and orphans, and Ali’s insistence on fairness and equality. Moreover, the protection of minority rights, prohibition of forced conversions, respect for prisoners of war, and establishment of social welfare through Bayt al-Mal (Public Treasury) reflected an inclusive and compassionate governance model. Economic rights were ensured through organized systems of Zakat, fair trade regulations, and measures against hoarding and exploitation. Women's rights also advanced significantly, as they were given rights to inheritance, education, and participation in social matters. Non-Muslims (Dhimmis) enjoyed protection of life, property, and religious freedom under Islamic law. In today's world, where human rights violations and social injustices are rampant, the Rashidun model offers timeless principles of governance, emphasizing justice, equity, and human dignity. This study explores how these values were implemented and highlights their relevance in modern times.
