An Analytical Study of the Exegetical Benefits Derived from the Sayings of Sufis in Tafsir Mazhari
Abstract
The reflection of exegetical benefits derived from the sayings of Sufis in Tafsir Mazhari represents a distinctive aspect of Qazi Sanaullah’s interpretive methodology and style. Throughout his commentary, he frequently cites the statements and opinions of his spiritual mentor, the accomplished Shaykh Ya‘qub Karkhi, along with the views of eminent Sufi scholars. Qazi Sanaullah elucidated the spiritual and practical dimensions of Sufism in the light of the Qur’an and Hadith, presenting profound intellectual and experiential discussions on themes such as self-purification (tazkiyah al-nafs), divine love, and nearness to Allah. In Tafsir Mazhari, Qazi Sanaullah Panipati (رحمہ اللہ) systematically compiled the statements of the leading scholars (A’immah) in order to make the theoretical and practical dimensions of Sufism comprehensible to a wider audience. This effort presents a comprehensive and coherent portrayal of Sufism. The sayings of Sufi scholars, jurists, and spiritual authorities cited in Tafsir Mazhari serve as a rich source of intellectual and spiritual depth within the discourse of Sufism. These statements clarify the meanings of the Qur’an and Hadith and assist in understanding the practical principles of Sufism.By organizing and presenting these sayings in a structured manner, Qazi Sanaullah Panipati offered the teachings of Sufism within an integrated intellectual framework, providing guidance for the purification of the soul and the attainment of closeness to Allah. Below, I will present the statements of prominent Sufi authorities mentioned in Tafsir Mazhari, which have been cited as key sources in discussions related to Sufism.
