The Social Aspect of Worship in the Prophetic Biography (Seerah): A Study in the Light of Shia Sources
Abstract
This paper examines the social aspects of worship (Ibadaat) in the Prophetic biography (Seerah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) through the perspective of Shia sources. It discusses how Islamic worship activities, including prayer, fasting, zakat, Hajj, supplication, and remembrance, cut across individual spirituality and are potent tools of social reform, justice, equality, and community bonding. The study shows that the worship in the Seerah is not solely ritualistic but a holistic system that creates an ethical and righteous society through encouraging brotherhood, eradicating oppression, economic stability, and supporting family and community ties. The paper examines the social dimensions of congregational prayer in fostering equality and unity, the purpose of fasting in the cultivation of empathy towards the poor, the welfare system developed by zakat and charity, the universal brotherhood developed in Hajj and moral training developed through supplications and remembrance of Allah. Special attention is given to Shia expositions and teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt especially those of Al-Kafi, Tahdhib al-Ahkam, Wasail al-Shia, Bihar al-Anwar and Sahifah Sajjadiyyah that introduce worship as an instrument of social revolution and the introduction of justice (Adl). The paper concludes that the social aspects of worship need to be restored in the modern world to deal with such problems as economic inequality, decadence, sectarianism and social disintegration. It also highlights the need to have similar understanding of worship amongst Islamic sects as a way of promoting inter-sectarian peace and enhancing Muslim unity.
