Prevention of the Growing Trend of Drug Abuse in the Light of Islamic Teachings: An Analytical and Research Study

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of drug abuse is one of the most significant social, moral, medical, and economic challenges of the contemporary world. Its harmful effects have adversely impacted individuals, families, and society at large. The younger generation, in particular, has become the primary victim of this devastating menace, resulting in physical illnesses, psychological disorders, family disintegration, criminal activities, unemployment, and moral decline. This research article presents an analytical and scholarly study of the causes, consequences, and effective remedies for the growing trend of drug abuse in the light of Islamic teachings. The study examines relevant Qur'ānic verses and Prophetic traditions (Aḥādīth) to demonstrate that Islam strictly prohibits everything that harms human intellect, health, morality, and social security. The Holy Qur'ān declares intoxicants to be an abomination and an act of Satan, commanding believers to abstain from them. Likewise, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ establishes comprehensive legal principles—such as "Every intoxicant is prohibited" and "Whatever intoxicates in large quantities is prohibited even in small quantities"—which encompass all forms of ancient and modern intoxicating substances. Furthermore, the opinions of classical Muslim jurists and contemporary Islamic scholars affirm that all modern narcotic drugs are unlawful (ḥarām), as they impair human intellect and inflict serious harm upon life and property. The findings of this study indicate that the prevention of drug abuse cannot be achieved through legal measures alone. Rather, it requires the promotion of faith (Īmān) and God-consciousness (Taqwā), religious and moral education, a strong family system, righteous companionship, an effective educational environment, social awareness, the implementation of the Islamic principles of enjoining good and forbidding evil, sound governmental legislation, and proper rehabilitation programs for drug addicts. The study concludes that the practical implementation of Islamic teachings at the individual, familial, educational, and state levels can significantly reduce the growing trend of drug abuse and contribute to the establishment of a healthy, morally upright, and peaceful Islamic society.
