The Qur’anic Causes and Consequences of Concealing the Truth and Its Manifestations in Pakistani Society: An Analytical Study

Abstract

This study examines the Qur’anic causes and consequences of concealing the truth (Ikhfāʾ al-Ḥaqq) and analyzes its manifestations in Pakistani society. The Qur’an strongly condemns the deliberate concealment of truth, particularly when individuals or groups recognize the truth but suppress it because of worldly interests, envy, prejudice, group loyalty, fear, personal desires, or the protection of positions and vested interests. The Qur’anic accounts of the Children of Israel provide prominent examples of this conduct, demonstrating how the concealment of divine guidance and established truths can lead to moral and spiritual decline. Using an analytical and applied methodology, this study explores the linguistic and conceptual meanings of Ikhfāʾ al-Ḥaqq and identifies its major causes and consequences in the light of the Qur’an and Sunnah. It further examines the phenomenon through selected Qur’anic examples, particularly the conduct of the Children of Israel, and relates these principles to contemporary Pakistani society. The study identifies various manifestations of concealing the truth in religious, family, educational, commercial, judicial, media, and administrative contexts. It argues that concealing truth undermines social trust, weakens justice and accountability, promotes moral decline, and contributes to individual and collective injustice. The study concludes that the Qur’anic principles of truthfulness, justice, intellectual honesty, testimony to truth, accountability, and moral responsibility provide an effective framework for addressing the problem of concealing truth in contemporary society. The practical application of these principles can contribute significantly to strengthening transparency, social trust, ethical responsibility, and moral reform in Pakistani society.
