Qur’anic Financial Principles: Fundamental Concepts and Their Application in the Contemporary World
Abstract
This study examines the fundamental financial principles of the Qur’an and explores their ethical foundations and relevance to contemporary economic life. The Qur’an presents a comprehensive financial framework that connects economic activity with justice, accountability, social responsibility, transparency, and the fair circulation of wealth. Its financial teachings are not limited to the accumulation and management of wealth; rather, they address how wealth should be acquired, used, distributed, and protected in ways that promote individual well-being and social justice. Key principles include the concept of divine ownership, lawful earning and trade, zakāt and infaq, charitable support, the prohibition of riba, financial transparency, mutual cooperation, and the protection of vulnerable groups.
Using a thematic and analytical approach, this study examines these principles as an integrated Qur’anic framework and considers their application to major economic challenges of the contemporary world, particularly wealth concentration, economic inequality, excessive debt, financial exploitation, and social insecurity. The study further discusses the relevance of Qur’anic principles to contemporary Islamic finance, including interest-free financial practices, waqf-based development, Islamic microfinance, takāful, and ethical investment. It argues that the contemporary relevance of Qur’anic financial teachings lies not merely in replacing interest-based transactions, but in developing a broader financial culture based on justice, shared responsibility, transparency, and social welfare. The study concludes that the Qur’anic financial framework provides a coherent ethical foundation for developing more inclusive, responsible, and socially sustainable approaches to contemporary economic development.
