Imam al-Bukhārī’s Philosophy of Education in Light of the (Kitāb al-ʿIlm) in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: A Contemporary Appraisal
Abstract
Imam Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl al-Bukhārī (d. 256 AH/870 CE) compiled his al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaḥīḥ not merely as a collection of prophetic traditions but as a carefully organized work whose chapter headings (tarājim) convey legal, ethical and pedagogical judgments. Nowhere is this more evident than in its Book of Knowledge (Kitāb al-ʿIlm), placed immediately after the chapters on revelation and faith. This article offers a contemporary appraisal of the educational philosophy that emerges from that book. After briefly introducing the life and scholarly contribution of al-Bukhārī, the nature and method of his Ṣaḥīḥ, and the structure of Kitāb al-ʿIlm, the study analyzes its chapters and narrations to identify core educational principles: the priority of knowledge over speech and action; understanding (tafaqquh) rather than rote retention; questioning and dialogue as teaching tools; graduated, considerate instruction; a psychologically safe learning environment; inclusion of women in learning; the complementarity of memorization and writing; travel in pursuit of knowledge (riḥla); integrity and verification in transmitting information; and the humility and preservation of teachers.
Each principle is then set beside modern educational scholarship, including constructivist learning theory, cognitive load theory, research on psychological safety, critical pedagogy and information literacy. The article argues that these principles offer a coherent ethical and pedagogical foundation for addressing present-day problems such as examination-driven rote learning, curricular overload, unequal access to education and the spread of misinformation. It also cautions that al-Bukhārī did not articulate a systematic theory of education; the framework presented here is an interpretive reading of his chapter headings and selection of reports, and its application today requires sensitivity to historical context.
