Abstract

This paper shows a critical analysis of the classic and present research trends in Islamic sciences with references to their development in history, methodology and current challenges. The Islamic sciences, which include fields of study like Quranic studies, Hadith,Fiqh, Sufism, philosophy, history and theology have all had a historical development that comes in various intellectual forms. The study examines the way in which early Muslim thinkers developed systematic approaches based on authenticity, sanad (chains of transmission) and strict intellectual investigation. Those traditional approaches guaranteed the maintenance and continuity of knowledge, but also indicated some limitations, including inability to adapt to arising problems. However, the current research trends which have been largely influenced by the globalization, western academic methodologies and the digital technology have brought new insights such as the critical analysis, interdisciplinary research methodologies and comparative research studies. The paper will examine how the new generation researchers both incorporate new methods of study such as digital archives, scientific, and sociological approaches into the study of Islam, and also discusses the problem of plagiarism, a loss of quality, and a dependence on Western paradigms. The study also makes an analysis of the influence of the Orientalist works, the reaction of the Muslims to these works and the continuous process of the dialogue of tradition and modernity. Thematic, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches which are increasingly defining the modern Islamic scholarship are given special attention. Further, the paper pinpoints research gaps that are considered crucial like the inception between classical Islamic thought and modern sciences and emphasizes the necessity of adopting moderate research approaches entailing the acknowledgement of authenticity of tradition and incorporation of analytical rigor of the modern scholarship. The proposed results imply that the hybrid approach to research incorporating the advantages of both traditional and modern research can promote the international acclaim and scholarly plausibility of Islamic sciences. This kind of approach will not only help in saving intellectual heritage of the Muslim ummah but also help such sciences to solve the current challenges. In conclusion, the paper focuses on methodological rejuvenation, depth of subject, and the interdisciplinary cooperation as the future of Islamic studies.
